Secret Colours: “Faust” music video

Secret Colours have recently unveiled the music video for their psych mood changer, “Faust,” which depicts some unforseen risks involved in robbing a convenience store. The track is one of five to appear on the band’s upcoming EP, EP3. You can catch Secret Colours on Saturday, Jan. 7 at the Empty Bottle for their EP release show.

Dum Dum Girls: “Bedroom Eyes” (playing Empty Bottle this Friday)

Dum Dum Girls just released their latest Sub Pop LP, Only In Dreams this September. Like many of their contemporaries, they play a sort of Phil Spector-ish Girl Group brand of DIY Punk/80s post punk.

The first single and video off the album is the dreamy, “Bedroom Eyes.” It’s a girl group tune with Smiths undertones. Though Dee Dee sounds like Elvis’s female counterpart as she sings words like “undulates” and the harmonies are beautifully visualized through a kaleidoscope, it’s the super fuzzy, old-school solo that really floors me. If Dum Dum Girls can break out with Only In Dreams,  I think they’ll do for leggings, mascera, and lipstick what the Beatles did for Chelsea Boots and mop tops.

Dum Dum Girls will be playing at Empty Bottle this Friday (10/14) with Crocodiles

Show Preview: Vivian Girls, Widowspeak, and Nones this Thursday at Empty Bottle

As a part of Permanent Records’ 5th anniversary, Brooklyn’s Vivian Girls will be headlining a show at Empty Bottle this Thursday (9/15) with fellow New Yorkers, Widowspeak, and Chicago’s Nones.

Vivian Girls: An updated version of the 60s girl group with touches of lo-fi garage rock and Ramonesy punk. Back in April they played a sold out show with the Black Lips and Outer Minds at Logan Square Auditorium.

Widowspeak: Indie rock whose use of reverb, western-influenced lead guitar work, and soft vocals place them somewhere between their tourmates and the Raveonettes. And you might even catch a cover of Chris Isaack’s “Wicked Games.”

Nones: You might get away with calling it punk. You might get away with psychedelic, but I’m not sure there’s really a satisfying name for what Nones (Hozac) do.

Nones start of the show at 9:30 and tickets are $12.
